Abstract

As a country with a diverse population, Indonesia has a high potential for inter-religious conflict. This article discusses several examples of religious conflicts that have occurred in Indonesia, such as the rejection of a Buddha statue in Tanjung Balai, the burning of the HKI church in Aceh, discrimination against Confucians during the New Order era, the rejection of the construction of the St. Joseph Parish Church, and the Bali Bombing I. These conflicts are driven by various factors, including misunderstanding, radicalism, competition, lack of tolerance, and injustice. However, Indonesia also has a strong tradition of pluralism, evident in its religious diversity, inter-religious tolerance, interfaith dialogue, and inter-religious cooperation. Religious diversity in Indonesia is manifested in the existence of various religions and beliefs, such as Islam, Christianity, Catholicism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, and local beliefs. Inter-religious tolerance is shown through mutual respect and appreciation among different faith communities. Interfaith dialogue, facilitated through interfaith forums, serves as a platform to build understanding and communication among religious adherents. Inter religious cooperation, demonstrated through various social and humanitarian activities, shows that religious differences do not hinder unity and solidarity. The biggest challenge in maintaining religious pluralism in Indonesia is radicalism and extremism, which can divide society and threaten tolerance. Discrimination and injustice against certain religious groups can also trigger conflicts and hinder the realization of a fair and equal society. A lack of understanding of religious pluralism can lead to misunderstandings, prejudices, and inter-religious conflicts. This article concludes that religious conflicts in Indonesia can be addressed by enhancing tolerance, promoting interfaith dialogue, and fostering a better understanding of pluralistic values. Increasing tolerance can be achieved through education, the dissemination of tolerance values, and efforts to build mutual respect among religious communities. Interfaith dialogue can serve as a means to build understanding, resolve conflicts, and find joint solutions. Enhancing understanding of religious pluralism can be pursued through education, accurate information dissemination, and initiatives to increase the general understanding of the value of inclusiveness and diversity..
