Abstract

Initially, Ennahda was a political party in Tunisia with an ideology of Islamism. When Ennahda won the general elections in 2011, the party was more compromised by the political realities around it and was rational in its political attitudes and actions. In 2015, Ennahda formed a coalition government with electoral winning parties as well as pro-secularist political rivals, the Nidaa Tounes party. At the 10th congress on May 20 2016, Ennahda issued an official statement that the party was separating itself between religious and political activities. This study aims to explain the reasons and factors that led to changes in political strategy that occurred in the Ennahda party in Tunisia. Analysis of changes in Ennahda's political strategy will be reviewed through Post-Islamism and Constructivism Theory. This study uses secondary data collected through library research studies and analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods. The results of the study show that the reasons and factors that led to changes in the political strategy of the Ennahda party in Tunisia in 2016 were due to new political challenges, namely the condition of a pluralistic political environment and demands for compromise in the framework of building a civil society; the emergence of hard-line Islamic movements and extremist groups in Tunisia; the military coup against the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt in 2013; and growing public discontent with the party-led government coalition.
