Abstract

Most countries in the world know that Indonesia is a country rich in culture, including dance, which is an important part of the socio-cultural life of a multicultural society. In Belu Regency and Malaka Regency, which share the same cultural roots from the same ancestors, there is a traditional dance, "Bidu Lalok Dato," which is a cultural heritage of the Tetun tribe. This dance is rich in meaning, symbols, and cultural values passed down from generation to generation. This study aims to uncover the meaning of cultural communication in the traditional dance "Bidu Lalok Dato" taught at SDK Nurobo-Laenmanen District-Meotaroi Village-Malaka Regency and competed in important events in the district and in the Nurobo parish. This study uses an ethnographic communication approach to explore local values and how to convey cultural messages through dance. Through observation, document studies, and video analysis of the competition, it was found that "Bidu Lalok Dato" is not only an artistic expression, but also a means of inheriting values, such as respect for ancestors, social solidarity, and Tetun tribal identity. This dance has been taught for generations by teachers and traditional leaders and is part of the local curriculum in schools. Research shows that nonverbal and symbolic communication in the dance plays a crucial role in shaping children's cultural understanding from an early age.
