Keywords:
Pancasila; Democracy; Pluralism; Political ExtremismAbstract
As the largest archipelagic country in the world, Indonesia boasts a rich cultural heritage. Pluralism exemplifies this diversity. Various aspects of life have been transformed by modernization, including how society perceives differences. Pluralism, which fosters diversity across cultural, religious, and ideological dimensions, shapes a modern society where people from diverse backgrounds coexist. Beyond enriching culture, pluralism promotes tolerance, mutual understanding, and enhances opportunities for innovation and collaboration. However, pluralism also presents challenges, one of which is political extremism fueled by primordial sentiments and intolerance, posing a real threat to democracy and social stability. It is hoped that Indonesia’s democracy, rooted in the national ideology of Pancasila, can serve as a foundation to address political extremism while safeguarding pluralism by supporting a unifying ideology and suppressing minority groups. Pluralism in modern society is an undeniable reality. When approached earnestly by all parties, pluralism can contribute to building a fair, peaceful, and prosperous community.
