Abstract

As stated in its constitution, Indonesia is a country based on law. This indicates that the Indonesian government does not only rely on power alone, but also involves the role of the people, sovereignty, and recognition from the international community. The constitution is a crucial element in the state system that cannot be separated. One of its main functions is to control the government's power to remain within predetermined limits, while guaranteeing protection of citizens' rights such as freedom of opinion, religion, association, and receiving legal protection is one of these rights. A democratic constitution should open the door for active citizen involvement in the political process and at the same time be a strong foundation for economic and social progress. Its existence is very important in promoting transparent, accountable, and corruption-free governance, by providing a solid foundation to ensure the integrity and continuity of government that is responsible to the people. This research was conducted through a literature study method, with materials obtained from scientific journals. From this research, various historical, sociological, and political sources were found that explain the role of the constitution in the life of the nation and state in Indonesia.
