Respiratory failure is a common life-threatening condition that requires proper diagnosis and proper assessment and management. Malnutrition is a nutritional status based on the weight-for-age index (BW/A) which is the equivalent of the terms underweight and severely underweight. Toddlers are said to be malnourished if the Weight-for-Age Index (BW/A) is less than -3 SD. Indicators of respiratory failure are respiratory frequency and vital capacity, normal respiratory frequency is 16-20 x/min. If more than 20x/min, the action taken is to provide ventilator assistance because the "work of breathing" becomes high so that fatigue occurs. Vital capacity is a measure of ventilation (normal 10-20 ml/kg). The results of this study are that the prognosis of malnutrition in children is greatly influenced by the severity of the condition and the age at which malnutrition occurs. Malnutrition in children, especially in toddlers, can cause various long-term complications, including impaired growth and development, decreased immunity, impaired organ function, electrolyte imbalance, digestive disorders, mental health problems, and even the risk of death.
