Abstract

This research wants to know the thoughts of one of the first generation critical figures from the Frankfurt School, namely Max Horkheimer. This study uses a qualitative methodology with a literature review study. Based on the literature review study, there are several works of Max Hoekheimer's thought. However, what this research wants to discuss are two of Max Horkheimer's prominent thoughts, namely: Dialectic of Enlightenment and Critical Theory. Dialectic of Enlightenment is a book written by Adorno and Horkheimer which was published in 1947 under the title Dialectic der Aufklarung which contains a critique of modern society. This book advances the claim that the systematic search for enlightened reason and freedom has had the long-term ironic effect of giving birth to new forms of rationality and oppression. The various essays collected in "Critical Theory" not only contain an acute rejection of positivism, but also contain a denial of the scientific tendencies of orthodox Marxism. According to Horkheimer, the task of critical theory is to penetrate the world of things and show the basic relationships between persons.
